The
Conservation Commission was established in 1967 under the Massachusetts
General Laws (MGL) Ch. 40, 8C. The mandate of the Conservation Commission
was to protect natural resources and watershed resources for the
Town.
Wetlands
Protect Act MGL ch. 131, 40
The
Commonwealth of Massachusetts enacted the Wetlands Protection Act
in 1963 to protect wetlands and bordering resource areas from potential
loss to development. Town Conservation Commissions are required
to implement the wetland regulations at the local level.
The
Rivers Protection Act
The Rivers Act was incorporated into the Massachusetts
Wetlands Protection Act in 1996 to strengthen the protection of
rivers, perennial streams and their riverfront areas. The
Riverfront Area is the area of land between a river's mean annual
high-water line measured horizontally outward from the river and
a parallel line located 200-feet away.
Walpole
Wetlands Bylaw
The Town of Walpole Wetlands Bylaw additionally
protects resource areas defined as any bank, wetland, stream, river,
pond, vernal pool, or any land bordering thereon, or any land subject
to flooding.
