Motor Vehicle Excise Information


You may be entitled to a Motor Vehicle Excise refund or abatement:
  • when the motor vehicle has been sold, traded or junked AND you have proof of such AND the disposition of the license plate
  • when a registrant and motor vehicle are transferred to another state or country with proof of registration in such other state or country AND proof of cancellation of registration in Massachusetts
  • when a motor vehicle is overvalued and you have a letter from the Registry of Motor Vehicles or dealer stating the original MSRP
  • when there is a subsequent registration of the same vehicle in the same year by the same person
  • when the vehicle was stolen or declared a total loss, and you have a letter from your insurance company indicating the date of settlement AND proof of the disposition of the license plate
  • when the motor vehicle is transferred to another city/town in Massachusetts prior to January 1 with proof of the garaging change from your insurance company
  • when the vehicle is stolen and you have a copy of the police report AND proof of disposition of your license plate.

Application for abatement or refund must be filed with the Board of Assessors within three (3) years after the date the excise was due or one (1) year after the date the excise was paid, whichever is later.
