The Council on Aging is the department of town government that assesses the needs and provides the services for residents age 60 and older. The Council was established by the Town of Walpole on April 28, 1969 in response to the legal mandate of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, created by Chapter 495 of the Acts of 1956 and made part of the General Laws Section 8B of Chapter 40.

The Aurelia M. Newell Center located in the Town Hall is the focal point of senior activities. The Center is open Monday through Friday according to Town Hall hours. Congregate and home delivered meals are provided Monday through Friday. Activities at the Center include fitness class, yoga, walking club, educational and recreational programs, legal services, seasonal tax preparation, nutrition, health screenings, and a wide range of volunteer opportunities.
