April 9, Wednesday

  • Understanding the Development of the Adolescent Brain
7:00-9:00 P.M. at the Walpole High School Auditorium
The Town of Walpole is one of about 1500 towns nationwide that will be holding a "Town Hall Meeting" to alert the community to new research on the risk of underage drinking and empower the community to take action to stop it. The Federal Government's Interagency Coordinating Committee for the Prevention of Underage Drinking is supporting these "meetings" that will be taking place across the country during the first 2 weeks of April which coincides with April's Alcohol Awareness Month.
Underage drinking is an important community concern. Nationwide among eighth graders, about 1 in 20 (5.5%) reported being drunk at least once in the past month. Nearly 1 out of every 5 tenth graders (18.1%) and about 3 out of every 10 twelfth graders (28.7%) reported being drunk at least once in the last month. In Walpole's Youth Risk Survey for 2007, 42% of juniors reported having 5 or more drinks of alcohol in a row at least once in the last month (the survey was administered in May 2007).
Parents, children and teens will hear new research findings on barriers to adolescent learning and strategies to help children and teens avoid risky behavior. We will be raffling off 1 Silver iPod nano 4GB (5 hours of video or 24 hours of audio) and 2 $15 iTunes gift cards to people attending that are under the age of 21. This is a perfect program for parents, children and teens to go to so our community can Start Talking and Keep Talking about this very important issue of underage drinking in our Community. The Coalition for Alcohol Awareness hopes that we fill the High School Auditorium.
